Warhammer 40,000 Blood Angels Death Company review

On the eve of replica watches battle Blood Angels kneel in prayer to pay homage to Sanguinius. During these prayers some Battle Brothers succumb to the Black Rage and are formed into a single unit, the Death Company.

The Death Company fight without fear and ignore wounds that would kill a normal Space Marine.

First impressions

The miniatures pictured on the Death Company box look absolutely amazing, especially the Thunder Hammer wielding model, all of which bodes well for the boxes contents.

The pro’s

Firstly, as you would expect with an all plastic kit, it is much more flexible than the old metal & plastic Death Company models.

The reason for this? The sprues are just crammed full of goodness!

Sprue 1Sprue 2

The sprues include all the weapons options available to the Death Company in the new Codex. There are bolters, bolt pistols and chainswords for all 5 marines along with 2 Infernus Pistols, 2 Plasma Pistols, 2 Hand Flamers, 1 Power Fist & 1 Thunder Hammer.

There are also 8 heads, 20 shoulder pads, 5 back packs & 5 jump packs as well as a few odds and ends, remember this in a boxed set of just 5 models meaning you’ll have lots left over for converting standard Marine models to Blood Angels.

One feature that was a bit of a surprise, is the fact that there are left & right handed versions of the Hand Flamer, Infernus Pistol & Plasma Pistol which can then be equipped with left or right-handed chainswords. It just seems like something that wasn’t necessary but that Games Workshop went ahead and did it anyway, very nice indeed.

Also, the kit is a pleasure to work with, even someone as particular as myself can build a unit in a couple of hours (yes, this is quite some time but those mould lines have to be dealt with).

Most importantly however the sculpts are of superb quality and they perfectly convey the impression that the models are savagely hurling themselves into battle just as the Death Company would do.

The Con’s

OK – What to write…

In all honesty there is little wrong with this kit. It isn’t revolutionary, but this isn’t a crime in itself.

£20 RRP may seem a little steep for 5 plastic models but when you look at similar Games Workshop kits (for example the Space Marine Assault Squad at £16) it compares quite favourably, especially with all the extra bits you’ll have left over once you’ve built your 5 Death Company marines.

Alright, there are no real con’s. On to the…

Summary

The Blood Angels Death Company box set is an essential purchase for any Blood Angels player whether they intend to field a Death Company or not. One or two Death Company boxes contain enough parts to add a Blood Angels flavour to an entire 1,500pts army of standard marine models.

This reason as well as the fact they are great models in their own right means that the Death Company kit gets…
